After careful deliberation, he chose the Arabica bean, prized for its pronounced aroma, its mild, well-rounded flavor, and its low caffeine content. However, producing a superior coffee was inconsequential if he couldn't find a way to preserve the freshness. With great persistence, Illy soon found a solution: containers in which nitrogen is substituted for air, making it possible to keep roasted coffee fresh for up to 2 years! His pressurization method for preserving coffee made history and is still an integral part of the illy packaging today. Inside this 8.8-oz. pressurized container are illy's specially selected Arabica beans that have been freshly roasted and ground to a luxurious texture that's ideal for automatic drip coffee makers.. | | | Features: | |

Excellent in its price range - no "burnt" aftertasteJan 04, 2004
Among coffees in this price range, I haven't been able to find anything better. Illy is an italian brand and I am an italian who came to US 6 years ago: I claim my review does not have any shallow food-nationalism bias, but it might well be that I am influnced by my upbringing. This coffee is roasted much less than what americans are used to think as the "italian roast"; Illy calls it "medium roast". To give you a benchmark, it is roasted less than ANY Starbucks coffee I tried so far. The roasting can be seen by comparing the color of the powder. This particular Illy is lighter in color and it is bit reddish - close to the color of cocoa poweder (I mean cocoa powder processed with alkali, of course). The roasting is key for me because I dislike any coffee which tastes of burnt -- Illy does not. It's flavor is marked enough to fully come through even when drank with milk in a 50% coffee 50% milk proportion. It actually still tastes of coffee in this proportions. I use it both with milk for caffe-latte and for espresso. I prepare it with a stove-top espresso machine, such as Bialetti (also sold on Amazon). This particular tin I am reviewing (the one with the silver lid) contains ground coffee. It is grounded having in mind stove-top esperesso machine, and electric espresso machines and it is much finer than grounds for dripping machines. As you probably know, coffee should be drank very soon after roasting. In general this is true. Illy is one of the leaders in vacuum paking, so the shelf-life of its coffee is very long. The metal can is not just for beauty, it does keep the air out better then bags. Still, you don't want to buy it from a merchant who had it on its shelf for one year. All in all, there is better coffee around, but I can't find any better for this price either for delivery on the internet or from small roasters who roast their own coffee in the New Haven area.

i love this coffee - never bitter or "off"-tasting, even without the honey i prefer to drink it with. when i used to travel more regularly to europe in pre-euro days, i'd ALWAYS purchase illy at the local grocery store because it was about 50% of the best price i could find in the US. i once got a curious look from US customs after they looked at my 26" luggage - that's right, FILLED with ILLY cannisters.

the exponential growth in its priceMar 06, 2006

The quality of this product is excellent. I think only some micro roaster or dedicated home roaster can beat it. Its price however has been going up like 10% every year in the US. $13-$14 a 250 gram can (about 1/2 lb) is just cracy. It costs about half that price anywhere in Europe. I stopped using it because it is such a rip-off.

By A. Goodwin Illy wins hands down! It may seem a bit luxurious to spend so much on 8oz of coffee, but once you try it - you won't want to drink anything else! It has a wonderful aroma and flavor. Trust me - I live in Seattle!
