Damn, this is good.........May 25, 2011
By Fasi H. Siddiqui Being in the restaurant industry I have had my share of quality pasta sauces. Fortunately in this case I was able to receive this one in a jar and take it home with me. I was very impressed. It has a restaurant quality taste and is definitely one of the better bottled sauces I have tasted. The fresh ingredients make a difference, no puree. Great taste, you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

I love it!Oct 19, 2010
By GenXmom I finally found a jarred pasta sauce I love! Batali's Tomato Basil has become my in-a-pinch jarred sauce for my family: it tastes fresh, light, not overly basilish, and balanced between salty and sweet. (Too sweet and icky for me would be something like Newman's Sockarooni.) My kid loves it, too. He calls it "yummy." I actually love this sauce much more than the better known Rao's version, so I definitely recommend it -- when you are in a rush and need to feed family, this sauce is perfect.
Thin, tasteless and boringFeb 09, 2012

Thin, tasteless and boring. That pretty much describes this sauce (and the pink vodka sauce by this brand). It's so bad I'm shocked that Mario Batali put is name on this!
The Pros: The sauce has a nice color and a nice texture with some chunkier peices in it.
The Cons: The sauce is thin in between the chunkier bits so it doesn't cling well to the pasta. You can see bits of garlic, onion and (minimal) spices in the sauce but the flavor has been completely boiled out of it to point that all that's left the bitter part of the garlic and the acidic part of the tomatoes. To say the flavors don't blend is an understatement. There are any flavors to blend in the first place.
I would be embarrassed to be Mario Batali right now. Obviously he has traded his expertise and food quality for the money making machine.
I severed this to good friends and they all agreed it wasn't a good sauce and that they would prefer not to have it again. I'll be writing a similar review for the pink vodka sauce which was also a disappointment.
