absolutely the best canned tomatoes AND organicJul 28, 2009

This is a ditto of my other Muir Glen tomato reviews, but I feel the same way about all of them, so here goes...I've generally avoided red sauces and anything with canned tomatoes, but Cook's Illustrated's recipe for almost-fresh pasta sauce made with these (or any Muir Glen tomatoes) has changed me for life. I'm also buying organic whenever I can, so now I've started experimenting with other tomato recipes using these and am loving them. My friends and family laugh at me when I do "subscribe and save" and buy a case at a time, but it's a great bargain and there's always a can (or more) on the basement shelf.

Versatile and deliciousJun 12, 2011
By veronica s I use canned tomatoes in, well, nearly most things I cook. I tend to stock up on the 32oz cans of whole plum tomatoes but sometimes you just need a little less, and the fire-roasted flavor can be a nice touch. I prefer to buy organic wherever possible and reasonable, and I like most Muir Glen products. These tomatoes are good, though they are packed in more of a water than sauce, so I always drain them before use. Some other canned tomato products I will dump straight into the pot, but I don't think these are great for that. They also aren't ideal for making tomato sauces but I use them for lots of other things: adding some tomato to bean chilis, throwing together a quick salsa, making spanish rice, adding to soups or stews, and (this is seriously delicious) stirring into a prepared batch of Annie's mac and cheese, along with a can of chickpeas. If you haven't tried this, it is SO good for a quick meal. Great pantry staple, at a MUCH better price with subscribe and save than you'd pay at the grocery store.

Muir Glen Organic Fire Roasted TomatosAug 29, 2008
By Neev I have a standing order for these tomatoes. They are simply the best. I could eat them right from the can, and I wouldn't do that with any other brand of canned tomatoes. Every recipe calling for tomatoes is improved with these. Highly recommend.

Best canned tomatoes out thereApr 29, 2008
By eyecore I'm not a big fan of tomatoes...but for certain broths (and chili base), they're used as a staple ingredient... The best thing about these is that they don't taste sweet like some other canned tomatoes.

Not healthy with BPA!Feb 18, 2010

Muir Glen cans are lined in plastic and leach Bisphenol A. Too bad because this was a great product and was a standard in my household. My initial conversations with them they contradicted this fact, which to me was misleading. General Mills owns Cascadian Farms as well and now I don't buy there either. Now we use BioNature in jars or Pomi products in Tetra Pak cartons. All canned tomato products use BPA and so do many of the lids of jars used in food containment. Now I also just make from scratch which is made simple by chef Andrew Carmellini in Everyday Italian. Lydia Bastianich is another favorite chef that deserves mention for simple yet big flavors. Boil, peel, freeze and store. Can manufacturing companies that I corresponded with said they were working on a solution for later this year or next year.
